Sunshine and Sweat

you know
...back in the day....
i was always pissed off about something
i was mad
i was raging inside
i would treck myself
deep into the forest
i would scream
WHY!!!!
as loud as i could

i would cry
like a
lost boy

i wanted the world to be fun
like it was
when i was a child
my dad protecting us
my mom
sick all the time
telling us
i love you
every chance she had

at the kitchen table
we would mix
our ground beef gravy
with the corn and the peas
sometimes
canned
green beans
we smelled of
"sweat and sunshine"
as my friend
Lucket
says
of her grandchildren

i remember you
sweat and sunshine
swinging and singing
on the rope
flying
your braids coming out

your little pink sundress

dirty undies

free

and

i look back
at my life

and

i look back
at you
and
i see
childhood

i see
you
there are no disguises
no
masks
no word
will sway
my
knowledge
or stay
my observation
your blood is mine
your blood
is your moms
and
that makes
your blood

yours

you are
pumped through our hearts

i feel it

you sing in the bathtub
and
i know your voice

i know
the who
of you

life
is
always
a mirror
that we
all
look into

who is that
we see

i think
we always know the answers
and
it is
the answers that
are the
most

trouble
